Union Gospel Mission is seeking a part-time Music Director & Men's Assisting Chaplain. Flexible hours; Wednesdays required, and occasional weekend hours to preach chapel services when we do not have a volunteer preacher on the schedule. It is strongly recommended that the Music Director & Men's Assisting Chaplain live a short distance away (less than 15 minutes) so as to be quickly accessible on short notice.
Position Summary
The Christian Music Director & Assisting Men’s Chaplain is a part-time ministry position at UGM-TC, a Christ-centered rescue mission serving individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, and life crisis. The primary responsibility of this role is to develop, lead, and sustain a meaningful choral and worship music program that supports the Mission’s chapel services and spiritual environment.
In addition to music leadership, the position provides secondary spiritual support through Christian education, teaching, and preaching, helping to share the hope of the Gospel and encourage spiritual growth among staff, residents, and volunteers.
Primary Responsibilities (Music Ministry – Core Focus)
- Develop, launch, and maintain a choral music program that supports the Mission’s chapel services and special events by recruiting, mentoring, and leading a choir, which may include staff, residents, and/or volunteers. Plan and conduct regular choir rehearsals, fostering both musical growth and spiritual encouragement.
- Select and prepare worship music appropriate for chapel services, seasonal observances, and Mission events. Plan and lead worship music for staff chapel services, coordinating with chaplains, speakers, and leadership.
- Play piano to accompany congregational singing, choir music, and worship services.
- Read and interpret sheet music proficiently.
Secondary Responsibilities (Christian Education & Chaplaincy)
- Teach Men’s Bible studies.
- Preach or lead 9 am Wednesday staff chapel services as scheduled or requested. Attendance REQUIRED.
- Provide spiritual encouragement, prayer, and pastoral care to staff and program participants.
- Assist with planning and leading special services (e.g., Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, memorial services).
- Support the Mission’s broader spiritual programming and outreach efforts as needed.
Qualifications & Skills
- Proven experience in music leadership, with a strong emphasis on choral direction
- Proficiency in piano performance and music reading
- Strong foundational knowledge of Scripture and the ability to teach biblical truth clearly
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Prior experience in a church, rescue mission, or nonprofit ministry setting preferred

Work Schedule
Part-time; hours vary based on chapel services, rehearsals, Bible studies, and special events. Some evenings and weekends required. Working Wednesdays is required.
