Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated accompanist to support the 11:00 AM Sunday Mass
choir at Prince of Peace in Northwest Houston. This Mass, one of our largest weekend
liturgies with over 1k in attendance, is directed by Jorge Nuñez, Director of Music Ministry,
and features a seasoned SATB choir. The primary instruments available in the main church
are a Shigeru Kawai SK7 grand piano and a large 4-manual Allen organ (Q485s).
Proficiency on both piano and organ is essential.
Schedule & Commitments
- Weekly Rehearsals: Wednesdays at 7:00 PM
- Sunday Mass: 11:00 AM (Call time: 10:15 AM)
- Liturgical Seasons: Must be available for Holy Week and Easter, Christmas
Eve/Christmas Day, and other major solemnities
- Additional opportunities for occasional weddings and funerals
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Piano or Organ Performance, or equivalent training and
experience
- Comfortable and confident playing both piano and organ
- Strong sight-reading skills and the ability to effectively accompany choir rehearsals
and warm-ups
- Versatility in sacred music styles, including:
o Modern and traditional hymnody
o SATB choral repertoire from various musical periods
o Organ preludes and postludes
o Contemporary praise and worship music
o Gregorian chant
- Ability to improvise in a liturgical context
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Piano or Organ Performance, or currently pursuing one (priority
consideration will be given to these candidates)
- Solid understanding of the structure and flow of Roman Catholic liturgy
- Basic conducting skills (a plus)
- While a Catholic background is not required, all candidates must be willing to
respect and uphold the teachings of the Catholic Church and comply with the
guidelines of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
