Job Purpose:
The Director of Youth Ministries is responsible for directing the development and continuation of youth education for the spiritual development of youth of the church. In this position, the Director of Youth Ministries shall seek to foster a strong education program through building relationships with parents, students, volunteers, and church leadership that strengthens and nurtures young disciples of Jesus Christ. Further, the Director of Youth Ministries collaborates with the Director of Children and Family Ministries to fulfill the church mission of taking Christ into our lives, and out into the world.
Job Responsibilities:
- Plan, develop, implement, and supervise all aspects of a balanced youth ministry program (grades 7th-12th) specifically in the areas of discipleship, worship, team building, mission, and outreach
- Tailor the youth program (i.e. curriculum, music, games, events, retreats, and mission trips) according to a Wesleyan theology that aligns with the doctrine and polity of The United Methodist Church as detailed in The Book of Discipline
- Identify and create a clear pathway to Christian discipleship
- Facilitate and lead Sunday morning and evening youth programing
- Develop written short and long-term goals for the youth program
- Build impactful relationships with parents and students
- Recruit, educate, and equip adult volunteers to actively participate in youth ministry
- Maintain a safe and high-quality ministry environment; ensure compliance with Ministry Safe and church background standards for all young-adult and adult volunteers
- Escalate any concerns and potential conflicts to the Senior Pastor in a timely manner
- Partner with the Director of Children’s Ministries to invite and welcome new confirmands into the youth program ensuring a smooth transition to the next stage of discipleship growth
- Guide graduating high school seniors into young adult ministries as the next stage of discipleship growth
- Pray for and with students, parents, and youth leaders
- Serve as youth minister out in the community, being available to youth and parents in a variety of ways (attendance at extracurricular activities, responding to youth-related crises, conduct hospital visits, etc.)
- Promote the youth program through various mediums and social media platforms
- Miscellaneous
- Attend and actively participate in staff and church meetings
- Serve as a member of the Church Council
- Serve as point of contact for youth-related topics, issues, and committees
- Assist with Sunday worship services as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Job Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in social sciences, family and childhood education, or religious studies preferred
- Academic and/or specialized training in youth ministry preferred
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience working with youth (grades 7th-12th) required
- Proven track record of effective leadership and sound judgment required
- Demonstrate spiritual maturity and “good” moral character required
- A sense of call and a passion for working with youth required
- Strong desire to encourage multi-generational fellowship required
- Strong public speaking skills required
- Strong relationship building and interpersonal skills (with adults and children) required
- Sound understanding of Wesleyan theology required
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, planning, and organizing required
- Sound judgment and problem-solving skills required
- Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality of sensitive information required
- Proven reliability and dependability required
- Proven ability to manage time effectively required
- Proven ability to handle changes, delays and unexpected events required
- Proven ability to communicate effectively via email and in person required
- Work independently in the absence of supervision required
- Some travel required (retreats, summer camps, mission trips, etc.)
- Willingness to grow and adapt to changes in a growing local church required
- This position requires sitting, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, and lifting up to 50 pounds as needed to fulfill job duties and requirements
