Child Care Assistant - Job Description & Responsibilities
Anchor Early Learning Academy, a ministry of Divine Peace Church in Rockwall, TX, is seeking dedicated and compassionate individuals to join our team. About the Role
Our staff play a pivotal role in shaping young lives. You'll be responsible for the daily care, supervision, and education of children, ensuring a positive, stimulating, and safe environment that adheres to all Texas Minimum Standards for Child-Care Centers.
Key Responsibilities General Responsibilities (All Staff & Volunteers)
All Anchor Early Learning Academy employees, including those not directly counted in child-to-teacher ratios, are expected to:
● Demonstrate Professionalism: Show competence, sound judgment, and self-control when interacting with children and performing all assigned duties.
● Exhibit Respect & Patience: Relate to children with courtesy, respect, acceptance, and patience at all times.
● Value Diversity: Recognize and respect the unique qualities and potential of all children, their families, and their cultural backgrounds.
● Ensure Child Safety: Take proactive steps to prevent any child from being abused, neglected, or exploited while in our care.
● Report Concerns: Immediately report any suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) as mandated by the Texas Family Code, §261.101.
Additional Responsibilities for Staff
● Adhere to Standards: Know and consistently comply with all Texas Minimum Standards for Child-Care Centers.
● Continuous Supervision: Maintain continuous supervision of children by being physically close enough to intervene, and having auditory or visual awareness of each child's activities at all times. This includes:
○ Knowing the names and ages of all children in your care.
○ Always knowing the exact number of children you are responsible for, especially during transitions (e.g., moving indoors/outdoors, entering/exiting rooms).
○ Being prepared to intervene immediately to ensure child safety.
○ Adjusting supervision levels based on each child's age, developmental stage, individual differences, abilities, and needs, as well as the layout of the environment and any potential hazards.
● Focus on Children: Dedicate your attention entirely to the teaching, care, and supervision of children. This means refraining from:
○ Administrative or clerical tasks that distract from child supervision.
○ Personal use of electronic devices (e.g., texting, social media, internet Browse, checking email). Center-assigned devices may be used only for child-related documentation (e.g., attendance, daily notes, photos for parents).
○ Meal preparation (unless supervising 12 or fewer children).
○ Janitorial duties.
● Provide Individualized Care: Offer care that is tailored to each child's habits, interests, strengths, and any special needs, including specific supervision or care requirements.
● Positive Interactions: Interact with children in a consistently positive and encouraging manner.
● Set Appropriate Expectations: Establish behavior expectations that are suitable for each child's current stage of development.
● Foster Independence & Cooperation: Encourage developmentally appropriate independence through planned, flexible activities, and cultivate a cooperative, rather than competitive, atmosphere among children.
● Acknowledge Accomplishments: Show genuine appreciation for children's efforts and achievements.
● Ensure Continuity of Care: Share essential information with incoming caregivers about each child’s activities during the previous shift and any verbal or written instructions from parents to ensure seamless and consistent care.
Qualifications
● High School Diploma or GED required.
● Must be over 18 years of age.
● Must meet all background check and training requirements as mandated by Texas Child-Care Regulation.
● Previous experience preferred.
● Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and colleagues.
● Strong commitment to child safety and well-being.
● Demonstrated patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
● Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, and move quickly to supervise children.
