St. John Lutheran Church – Bellville, Texas
St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville, Texas, is seeking gifted, creative, and faithful worship leaders and musicians to help shape and lead a vibrant ministry rooted in our Lutheran heritage while reaching toward the future.
We value worship that is deeply grounded in Word and Sacrament, are proud of our identity as an ELCA congregation, and embrace a variety of musical expressions and worship styles.
Position Structure & Compensation
We are open to structuring this ministry in several ways, including:
- Multiple part-time positions sharing responsibilities among musicians, worship leaders, directors, and technical staff
- One full-time Worship & Music Director overseeing the broader worship and music ministry
- A customized arrangement built around the gifts and calling of the right candidate(s)
We are more interested in finding the right people than fitting applicants into a predetermined structure.
Compensation Guidelines
- Full-Time Worship & Music Director: Approximately $75,000+ annually, based on experience and scope of responsibilities
- Part-Time & Shared Leadership Roles: Compensation scaled according to responsibilities and hours
- Contract or Week-to-Week Musicians: Starting around $150 per service or engagement, with opportunities for recurring leadership and expanded responsibilities
Candidates with strengths in worship leadership, technology, directing ensembles, administration, or community music development are encouraged to apply.
About Our Congregation
St. John is a multi-generational congregation with a rich and diverse worship life.
Current Worship Schedule
Saturday – 6:00 PM
Informal worship featuring a rotating Country Gospel group, Women’s Choir, piano, and organ accompaniment
Sunday – 8:00 AM
Traditional liturgical worship in the ELCA Lutheran tradition with organ and/or piano, Men’s Choir, mixed choir, and bell choir
Sunday – 10:30 AM
Contemporary/blended worship with praise band and youth involvement
Wednesday – Noon
Midweek worship with a classic Americana style
We also have an active bell choir and host:
- Sunday School
- Vacation Bible School
- Youth Ministry
- Camp Experiences
- Seasonal and community events including:
- National Day of Prayer
- Good Ol’ Country Gospel Concert
- Concordia Gesangverein
- Lent & Advent services
Many of these ministries include opportunities for music leadership and collaboration.
Areas of Responsibility
Responsibilities will vary depending on staffing structure and candidate gifts.
Worship Leadership & Planning
- Collaborate with the pastor and worship team in planning worship services
- Select music appropriate to seasons, themes, and Lutheran liturgical traditions
- Support worship that is both rooted and creative
- Assist with special services including Advent, Lent, Holy Week, Christmas, weddings, funerals, and festivals
- Ability to chant portions of the liturgy in the Lutheran tradition is appreciated but not required
Music Leadership
Coordinate and develop a variety of musical ensembles, including:
- Traditional worship musicians
- Contemporary praise band
- Men’s Choir
- Women’s Choir
- Early Birds Mixed Choir
- Youth Choir
- Bell Choir
- Bluegrass musicians
- Guest and seasonal musicians
We value broad musical appreciation and creativity. Candidates do not need expertise in every style but should enjoy helping others offer their gifts in worship.
Technology & Worship Production
- Oversee worship livestreaming and online worship presence
- Coordinate sound, projection, and AV systems
- Recruit and train volunteers
- Help ensure excellence in both in-person and online worship experiences
Faith Formation & Congregational Life
Potential opportunities may include:
- Youth ministry participation (VBS, camps, choirs)
- Community music outreach
- Building relationships with local and visiting musicians
- Supporting church-wide events and ministries
Connections with area musicians and artists are a plus.

We are seeking candidates who:
- Support and appreciate Lutheran ELCA theology and worship traditions
- Demonstrate a living Christian faith
- Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers
- Possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Are comfortable working across multiple worship styles
- Have musical proficiency in one or more areas:
- Voice
- Piano
- Organ
- Instrumental leadership
- Conducting
- Have familiarity with worship technology and AV systems
- Enjoy empowering volunteers and building teams
Formal music education is welcomed but not required. We value passion, creativity, flexibility, and a heart for ministry.
Compensation
Compensation and hours are negotiable and based on experience, qualifications, and position structure (part-time or full-time).
