Position OverviewThe School Counselor serves as a central leader in supporting the academic, social-emotional, and spiritual development of students across grade levels. This role requires a professional with both depth and breadth of experience, capable of navigating student support services, compliance processes, counseling needs, and college readiness systems, including standardized testing and post-secondary planning.

Ministerial CharacterCatholic schools in the Diocese of Austin are canonically obedient to the Bishop and assist him in fulfilling his ministry and canonical obligations. Pastors, presidents, and principals serve as leaders of the schools to make Christ's mission present and enduring throughout our learning environments.
Positions at St. Joseph Catholic School extend this ministry. The School Counselor supports the formation of students in a manner consistent with the teachings and values of the Catholic Church and serves as a witness to the faith in both word and action.
Key ResponsibilitiesStudent Counseling & Formation- Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students' social-emotional, behavioral, and academic needs
- Foster student growth in resilience, decision-making, and healthy relationships
- Support student formation through a Christ-centered approach rooted in dignity, compassion, and truth
Academic Planning, Testing & College Readiness- Guide students in academic planning, goal setting, and long-term preparation
- Support upper-level students and families in college awareness, applications, and post-secondary planning
- Coordinate and support standardized testing programs, including PSAT, SAT, and other assessments
- Assist with test preparation awareness, interpretation of scores, and alignment to student goals
- Help families understand academic pathways, testing benchmarks, and college readiness indicators
Student Support Services & Compliance- Participate in and support ARD (Admission, Review, and Dismissal) meetings
- Develop, implement, and monitor 504 Plans to ensure appropriate accommodations
- Collaborate with faculty to support differentiated instruction and student success
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and compliant student records
Collaboration & Communication- Partner with teachers, administrators, and parents to support the whole child
- Communicate clearly, consistently, and professionally with families
- Serve as a resource to faculty in addressing student needs and classroom strategies
- Contribute positively to team dynamics, strengthening the effectiveness and well-being of colleagues
Program Development & School Culture- Develop and implement a comprehensive school counseling program (study skills, digital citizenship, character formation, etc.)
- Contribute to a structured, positive, and faith-filled school culture aligned with the school's Core Values
- Support initiatives that promote student wellness, belonging, and growth
Crisis Response & Student Advocacy- Respond appropriately to student concerns, including crisis situations
- Coordinate with outside professionals and agencies when necessary
- Advocate for student well-being while maintaining appropriate confidentiality
Requirements
Qualifications- Master's degree in School Counseling, Psychology, or related field
- Valid school counseling certification (or ability to obtain in Texas)
- Demonstrated experience with:
- ARD processes and support for diverse learning needs
- 504 Plan development and implementation
- Standardized testing coordination (PSAT, SAT, or similar)
- Academic advising and college readiness counseling
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities with professionalism and clarity
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a team and elevate the performance and well-being of colleagues
- A calm, steady, and confidence-inspiring presence, particularly in moments of challenge or uncertainty
- The ability to maintain perspective, find appropriate humor, and approach hard work with positivity and resilience
- Practicing Catholic preferred; must support the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church
